Oral Cancer: Early Detection, Clinical Management, and Prevention

Identifying Pre-Malignant Lesions

Most oral malignancies do not appear overnight. They are preceded by visible, asymptomatic changes in the mucosal lining. Clinical vigilance should be maintained for Leukoplakia (thick, white patches) and Erythroplakia (red, velvety lesions). If these persist for more than two weeks, a biopsy is clinically indicated.

Surgical Resection and Reconstruction

The primary modality for localized oral cancer is surgical excision with clear margins. Because the oral cavity is critical for speech and deglutition (swallowing), resection often necessitates complex reconstructive surgery. Microvascular free tissue transfer allows surgeons to rebuild the tongue or jaw, preserving function.
