Breast Cancer

The most common cancer among Indian women — and one of the most treatable when found early. Most breast lumps are not cancer; the only way to know which kind yours is, is to have it checked.

The short answer

A new lump in the breast is not a diagnosis — most turn out to be harmless cysts or fibroadenomas. But every new lump in an adult woman deserves a clinical examination and usually an ultrasound or mammogram, within weeks, not months. Early breast cancer is very treatable, and increasingly treated without removing the whole breast.

Symptoms of breast cancer

  • 01A new lump in the breast or armpitUsually painless — pain is not a reliable sign either way
  • 02Change in size or shape of one breastA visible asymmetry that was not there before
  • 03Skin changesDimpling like orange peel, puckering, redness or thickening
  • 04Nipple changesA newly turned-in nipple, or blood-stained discharge
  • 05A sore that does not healOn the nipple or breast skin

Self-checks and screening

Every woman should know how her breasts normally look and feel, and check once a month — a week after the period ends, or any fixed date after menopause. What matters is noticing change and acting on it within weeks. Women over 40, and younger women with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, should discuss regular mammography; talk to us about the right interval for your case.

How breast cancer is treated at CoreOnco

Treatment is planned around the tumour's stage and its biology — hormone receptors and HER2 status from the biopsy decide as much as size does. Surgery is usually the first step: for many early cancers, breast-conserving surgery (removing the lump with a margin, keeping the breast) followed by radiotherapy is as effective as removing the whole breast. Where mastectomy is the safer choice, we say so plainly and discuss reconstruction options at the same visit — not afterwards.

Chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy are added based on the tumour's biology, at our Lucknow centre as daycare wherever possible so life continues around treatment.

What does breast cancer treatment cost?

Privately, breast cancer surgery — conserving or mastectomy — typically runs ₹1–2.5 lakh in Lucknow. The larger long-term line is often the drugs: 4–8 chemotherapy cycles at ₹15,000–40,000 per generic cycle, hormone tablets at a few hundred rupees monthly for years, and, for HER2-positive disease, targeted therapy that can add ₹1.5–3 lakh unless an access programme applies.

PM-JAY covers surgery, chemotherapy and admission cashless for eligible families; our counsellor also checks every drug-access programme for the costlier targeted agents before your first cycle.

Common questions

Is every breast lump cancer?
No — the majority are benign, especially in younger women. But the only safe rule is: every new lump gets examined and imaged. A clinical examination with ultrasound or mammography, sometimes with a needle test, settles the question quickly.
Will I lose my breast?
Often not. For many early-stage cancers, breast-conserving surgery plus radiotherapy gives the same survival as mastectomy. When mastectomy is genuinely the safer operation, reconstruction can frequently be planned — immediately or later. You will hear the honest options for your specific case before deciding.
Is breast cancer treatment covered under Ayushman Bharat?
Yes — surgery, chemotherapy and admission are covered under PM-JAY packages for eligible families, and our counsellor confirms your cover and handles pre-authorisation before admission.
I am under 40 — can I still get breast cancer?
Yes. It is less common but often more aggressive in younger women, which makes acting on a new lump quickly even more important — and family history matters: if your mother or sister had breast or ovarian cancer, tell the doctor at your first visit.
Does a mammogram hurt, and is it safe?
It is briefly uncomfortable — a few seconds of compression per image — and uses a very low radiation dose. The information it gives is worth far more than the discomfort.

A second opinion costs you nothing and often changes the plan. Share your reports on WhatsApp and a surgical oncologist will review them before your first visit.
