Chest & Lung Cancer
Cancers of the lung, the space between the lungs (mediastinum) and the chest wall. A smoker's cough that changes its character is the most ignored early warning in oncology — and the most worth acting on.
The short answer
A cough that lasts beyond three weeks, changes its pattern, or brings up blood needs a chest X-ray that same week — especially in anyone who smokes or has smoked. An X-ray costs little and takes minutes; lung cancer found early can be removed and cured, while lung cancer found late usually cannot be removed at all. Few cancers reward early action this sharply.
Symptoms of lung cancer
- 01A persistent or changed coughLasting more than three weeks, or a "smoker's cough" that becomes different
- 02Blood in the sputumEven once, even a streak — always needs an X-ray
- 03Breathlessness out of proportionNew shortness of breath on ordinary effort
- 04Chest painA persistent ache or sharp pain worse on breathing or coughing
- 05Repeated chest infectionsPneumonia that recurs in the same part of the lung
- 06Hoarseness, weight loss, or swelling of the face and neckSigns the disease is pressing on nearby structures
How lung cancer is diagnosed and staged
A chest X-ray is the first step; a CT scan defines what the X-ray suspects. Diagnosis needs tissue — by bronchoscopy or a CT-guided needle biopsy — and modern treatment also needs the tumour's molecular profile, because the drugs now differ by mutation. Staging scans then answer the deciding question: can it be removed?
How chest and lung cancer is treated at CoreOnco
Operable tumours are treated with surgery — removing a lobe of the lung with its lymph nodes — with intensive-care support behind every major chest operation. Tumours that cannot be removed are far from untreatable: targeted therapy for mutation-positive cancers and immunotherapy have changed outcomes meaningfully in the last decade, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy remain core tools.
Every case is staged honestly first. The worst outcome in lung cancer is a large operation that the disease had already outrun — or writing off as "inoperable" a patient whose scans say otherwise. We give you the answer the scans support, either way.
What does lung cancer treatment cost?
Privately, lung cancer surgery (lobectomy) typically runs ₹2–4.5 lakh. Molecular testing of the biopsy — which decides whether far-cheaper-to-run targeted tablets will work for you — costs ₹15,000–30,000 and is the best-spent money in the whole pathway. Targeted tablets range ₹10,000 to over ₹1 lakh monthly before access programmes; immunotherapy ₹1–3.5 lakh per cycle where genuinely indicated.
PM-JAY covers surgery, chemotherapy and admission for eligible families; for the newer drugs our counsellor checks scheme cover and manufacturer access programmes case by case — with the honest number in writing first.

Treatments used for chest & lung cancer
- 01Surgical Oncology →Removing the tumour with clear margins — the foundation of curative cancer treatment
- 02Chemotherapy →Drug treatment before or after surgery, as daycare or admission
- 03Targeted Therapy →Drugs matched to the specific mutation driving your tumour
- 04Immunotherapy →Helping your own immune system recognise and fight the cancer
- 05Palliative Care →Comfort, dignity and symptom control at every stage — not only the last one
- 06Intensive Care (ICU) →Round-the-clock critical care behind every major operation
Send us the biopsy report. We will tell you where you stand.
A second opinion costs you nothing and often changes the plan. Share your reports on WhatsApp and a surgical oncologist will review them before your first visit.
